Axes are a category of tools which are used primarily to harvest some logs from tree soil on the map. Logs are obtained from trees. In addition, axes can be used to convert logs into planks and in turn planks can be made into poles. This manufacturing aspect is especially useful at the beginning of the game to help bootstrap the process of making additional buildings, especially the crude bench saw.
